Thank you for posting this! I can only echo what you've said, so will bow out of further comments.

"That's so gay" is what "that's so retarded" was to my generation. Neither are appropriate, but neither generally are said with fully malicious intent.

do it with at least a halfway original thought

Excellent point. This has been mentioned in regards to avoiding coarse language, too.

off topic: I still double over with laughter when Gen Y kids try to explain why they use "frak" and "frakking". I read one explanation saying, in essence, that was a geek badge of honor. Hahahaha... no clue do they have...

[The original Battlestar Galactica had LDS writers, and the show was known for LDS symbolism... still is, as they've not stripped all of it for the reimagined series. If you've ever spent time in Southern Idaho or Utah, you might be familiar with "fetch", "flip", "oh my heck", and other Mormon cultural euphemisms for such language. I also had an LDS Education (Seminary) teacher that said "Yea, yea, nay, nay."]

good stuff here - and I'm sorry you continue to be internetless- that's a tough thing. ((hugs))
One of my best friends calls stuff "gay with aids" which I can't help but find somewhat amusing. My friend Kyle takes no offense so I see no reason to find it offensive.
I had to learn to curb the "gay" usage when I relocated to Dallas, since all of a sudden I found myself around many gay friends. If it is used now, it's in reference to something or someone who is pretentiously or obnoxiously effecting a stereotypically flamboyant homosexual behavior, and thus becomes laughable to other gay men who don't feel the need to make a public spectacle of themselves thusly.

But not just to mean "stupid". It has transcended that use.

"Retarded" still exists in my lexicon, usually with the adverb "wicked" before it and when spoken with a Boston or New York accent it becomes quite the epithet. Try it sometime. Any other inflection just loses effect. ;)

so I see no reason to find it offensive.

I wonder if you've ever talked with anyone who lost friends to AIDS during the 80s? I can guarantee that that will change your perspective on statements of this kind.

still is, as they've not stripped all of it for the reimagined series

Would "Kobol" be one of those things? (am being serious; I honestly don't know, but I have guesses.)

Interesting - and thanks!

I wonder, are there any LDS writers working on the current show?
